The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed that Cruz was attacked around 10:00 p.m., a few meters from the building housing the Casa de la Cultura, near Uruapan’s main square.

The murder occurred minutes after he conducted a live broadcast, in which he briefly interviewed Uruapan’s mayor, Carlos Manzo, about the fire that destroyed 66 market stalls in the “Tariacuri” market, which took place early Saturday morning under unknown circumstances.

The State Attorney General’s Office has withheld further details on the murder of Cruz, who spent the past eight years working as a reporter for the ABC de Michoacan and La Opinion de Michoacan newspapers.

In addition to directing the news outlet “Minute x Minute,” Cruz hosted the news program Enlace Informativo on Uruapan’s Radiorama radio station.

Personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office are currently reviewing surveillance footage from various businesses and homes to try to identify those responsible for the crime.

Since 2006, at least 18 journalists in the state of Michoacan have been murdered or disappeared, with these cases remaining unsolved.
